UPDATE: I have been wanting to experiment with Shiny for awhile, so I used this silly experiment as an opportunity to teach myself the basics. There’s now a barebones Shiny web app at https://ryancordell.shinyapps.io/BiblicalFindNReplace/ you can use to perform your own Biblical Substitutions

In my post/talk “Teaching Humanities Data Analysis” I recommended that such instruction start with creativity, and cited as an example an exercise I do with students designing mad-libs style Twitter poetry bots. The question of teaching data analysis is very much on my mind as I prepare the code workbooks that will serve as lessons for the “Introduction to Humanities Data Analysis & Visualization in R” I will teach with Gregory J. Palermo at the Digital Humanities Summer Institute next week.

This morning I came across a Facebook post by Lee Skallerup Bessette linking to Daniel Mallory Ortberg’s hilarious “Bible Verses Where “Behold” Has Been Replaced With “Look, Buddy”, which gave me an idea for a fun, simple, day one exercise that will teach the very basics of filtering textual data and manipulating strings. Essentially, I wrote a short R function that accepts two strings—a phrase to search, and a phrase to replace it with—searches the King James Version of the Bible for all verses including the search phrase, and creates a news version of that verse using the replacement phrase. It works just like the find and replace functions in a program like Word, but with the slight advantage of only outputting the verses that include the replaced phrase. The pertinent code can be found in this Gist on Github and I’ve embedded it below. Feel free to experiment with it!

To really come up with funny results, you have to be thoughtful about all of the contexts in which a given word or phrase are used, so that the substitution will be grammatically appropriate in each substitution. So, subbing “for real, dude,” for “verily” works in nearly every instance:
